iPhone 17 review: the biggest base-iPhone upgrade in years

Mobile Federation

For years the standard iPhone has been the sensible one: good enough, but missing the features Apple saved for the Pro. The iPhone 17 changes that. This iPhone 17 review is for Australian buyers weighing up the base model, whether that is new from Apple, refurbished, or against last year's iPhone 16. We will cover what is actually new, what it costs here, and who should buy it. The quick answer The iPhone 17 is the biggest upgrade to the standard iPhone in years. It gets a 6.3-inch ProMotion display that refreshes at up to 120Hz, which Apple had only ever put on Pro models. Storage starts at 256GB, double the iPhone 16's starting point. Add the A19 chip, a new 18MP Center Stage front camera and up to 30 hours of video playback, and it is a far easier recommendation than the iPhone 16 was. Apple Australia lists it new from A$1,549. If you are coming from an iPhone 13 or older, this is the one to upgrade to. iPhone 17 features: what is actually new ProMotion, finally The headline change is the display. Apple's iPhone 17 technical specifications list a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion and adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, plus an Always-On display. The iPhone 16 runs at 60Hz. If you have never used a 120Hz phone, scrolling, swiping and animations look noticeably smoother, and it is hard to go back. The screen also reaches up to 3,000 nits outdoors, which helps in harsh Australian sun. 256GB as standard There is no 128GB iPhone 17. The range starts at 256GB, with a 512GB option. For anyone who shoots a lot of 4K video or keeps years of photos on their phone, that removes the most common reason people used to pay for an upgrade. Cameras front and back On the back there is a 48MP Fusion main camera and, new for this model, a 48MP Fusion ultra-wide, up from 12MP. Apple also lists 2x optical-quality telephoto from the main sensor. The front gets an 18MP Center Stage camera with a square sensor, so you can take a landscape selfie or group shot without turning the phone sideways. Faster, tougher, longer-lasting The A19 chip has a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU. Apple quotes up to 30 hours of video playback, the front is Ceramic Shield 2, and water resistance is IP68 to 6 metres for up to 30 minutes. MagSafe charging goes up to 25W. Software and Apple Intelligence The iPhone 17 ships ready for iOS 27, which Apple released in September 2026, and it supports Apple Intelligence, including the new Siri. Those features need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, so anyone coming from an iPhone 15, 14 or older standard model gains them for the first time. That matters for how long the phone stays useful. A brand-new chip and 256GB of storage give the iPhone 17 plenty of headroom for the larger apps and on-device AI features that each iOS release brings. If you keep a phone for four or five years, this is a stronger starting point than any previous standard iPhone. What the iPhone 17 still does not do It is not a Pro, and a fair review should say where the line still sits: No dedicated telephoto lens. The 2x zoom comes from cropping the 48MP main sensor. It looks good, but for sport, wildlife or concerts you will want a Pro model with a true telephoto camera. No 128GB entry model. Doubling the base storage is good value, but it also means there is no cheaper way into the iPhone 17 new. Aluminium, not titanium or steel. It is light and tough, but it will show scuffs on the frame if you go without a case. iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16: is it worth the jump? Macworld's comparison of the two puts it bluntly: "There is no reason to pick the iPhone 16 over the iPhone 17" at Apple's prices. Its reasons line up with the specifications: Display: 6.3-inch 120Hz ProMotion against 6.1-inch 60Hz. Storage: 256GB to start against 128GB. Chip: A19 against A18. Macworld expects little difference in everyday use, but the newer chip should age better. Front camera: 18MP Center Stage against 12MP. Battery: up to 30 hours of video playback against 22. Refurbished changes the maths a little. As at 12 October 2026, a refurbished Apple iPhone 16 with the same 256GB of storage started at $1,039 in Excellent condition at Mobile Federation. If budget is tight and 60Hz does not bother you, that still saves real money. If you can stretch, the iPhone 17 is the better phone to keep for four or five years.
